Located in Encinitas, California, this project involved the design of a two-story accessory dwelling unit (ADU) carefully integrated into a tight area adjacent to an existing garage. The compact site required a thoughtful approach to spatial organization in order to maximize usable living space while maintaining a comfortable and functional layout.

The ADU is designed to wrap around the existing garage, creating an efficient footprint that utilizes previously underused areas of the property. The primary living space features an open gable ceiling, bringing natural light and vertical volume into the interior while enhancing the sense of openness within the compact structure.

In addition to the main ADU living space, the project includes a separate two-story bonus room structure connected to the ADU, providing flexible space that can be used for a studio, workspace, or additional living area.

Because the primary residence on the property was recently constructed, the project required coordination through the City of Encinitas Planning Department and Coastal Development review process. The design carefully responds to coastal development guidelines while maintaining a cohesive architectural relationship with the existing residence.

The result is a compact yet highly functional coastal ADU that demonstrates how thoughtful design can transform a constrained site into a flexible and comfortable living environment.
