Project Overview
The Balboa Multi-Family Housing project, developed in collaboration with Complete Community Housing Solutions (CCHS), represents a contemporary residential development in San Diego. The design emphasizes a modern architectural expression while addressing the constraints and geometry of the site.
The ground level is constructed using cast-in-place concrete, forming a solid base that anchors the building while creating a clear separation between the residential units above and the covered parking below. This concrete podium also helps screen the parking area from the street, reinforcing the building’s urban presence.
Above the base, the architecture transitions to a modern glass façade characterized by clean lines and open transparency. The upper floors extend outward with horizontal floor plates that provide shading for the levels below while enhancing the building’s strong horizontal composition.
A defining feature of the design occurs as the building responds to the shape of the lot. The extended floor plates converge toward a pointed corner condition, creating a dramatic architectural gesture. This projecting form reads almost like a long pier extending outward, visually anchored by a structural column that supports the tip of the building.
The result is a contemporary multi-family housing design defined by clean modern lines, structural clarity, and a bold response to the site geometry, making it a significant example of San Diego affordable housing.
